Manchester City v Southampton - Preview

Manchester City begin the defence of their Premier League crown live on Sky Sports as they host Southampton on Sunday.

City opened their season last weekend with victory in the Community Shield, but their focus will have always been on the opening day.

The title winners went the whole of last season undefeated at the Etihad Stadium in the league, and they have not lost at home since December 2010.

They play host to newly promoted Southampton, the runners-up in the Championship, in what is their first visit to City in the league for seven years - although it is their first top-flight match since 2005.

But recent history is actually very good for Southampton, as from their last five league matches at City they have lost just once, winning three of those games, including the last-ever match at Maine Road.

City's pre-season preparations have been very smooth, albeit the odd murmur from Roberto Mancini about the lack of incomings, although the arrival of Jack Rodwell last week from Everton looks to be the first of at least a couple of deals which should be in place before deadline day.

Southampton have brought in experienced Rangers midfielder Steve Davis, whilst youngsters Jay Rodriguez and Nathaniel Clyne have cost a combined £10million which highlights their intent.

A club record deal for Bologna's Gaston Ramirez is in place, but that deal will not be in place before Sunday.
