Germany wildcard Tommy Haas caused a significant upset with victory over 16-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer to win the Gerry Weber Open in Halle.
Second seed Federer, who has won the grass-court event five times, lost 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in an hour and 35 minutes.
Former world number two Haas, 34, is now ranked 87th and had lost his previous nine meetings with Federer.
But he proved too strong on Sunday as Federer's 49-match winning streak against Germans came to an end.
Haas said he was "mystified" with his unexpected passage to the final and he may have been even more surprised by this result.
Rafael Nadal's defeat left Federer as the overwhelming favourite to lift a sixth title at the Wimbledon warm-up event.
But Haas, the oldest player in the singles draw, overcame the Swiss for the first time since 2002 to secure his 13th career title.
He recovered dropping serve in game one by edging the first-set tie-break and then secured the decisive break in game nine of the second.
Haas served out the match to win Halle for the first time since 2009, when he went on to reach the semi-finals of Wimbledon.
He will hope for a similar run when he competes at the All England Club on a wildcard this year.
