Cavendish Planning on Pink

Team Sky's Mark Cavendish has targeted the pink jersey and victory in the team time trial at the Giro d'Italia.

The Manx cyclist heads a nine-man squad for the race, which begins in Denmark on 5 May before moving to Italy.

It will be the first time Cavendish has ridden for Team Sky in a Grand Tour event since joining them.

"We want to win the team time trial and hopefully that will get us the pink jersey - if we could achieve that it would be a massive honour," he said.

Cavendish, who moved to Team Sky at the beginning of the season, has been competing with Bradley Wiggins in the Tour de Romandie.

He will be joined in the Giro d'Italia by Peter Kennaugh, Geraint Thomas, Ian Stannard, Ben Swift, Bernhard Eisel, Juan Antonio Flecha, Sergio Henao and Rigoberto Uran.

He said he is confident Team Sky have "a good squad to go and win stages".

"Geraint, Pete and Swifty have just come off the track so they should have that explosive power which will be important in the first week, and the rest of the team have all done well in the classics," added Cavendish.

He said that competing in the Tour de Romandie had given him the chance to "get some miles in the legs so come the start [of the Giro] in Denmark, I'll be raring to go".
