Gibson Czechs out of Republic Match

Everton's Darron Gibson has withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad for next week's friendly against the Czech Republic because of a knee injury.

The Barclays Premier League club announced the midfielder's withdrawal from the 29 February game in a statement on Thursday night.

Gibson, 24, is not a regular starter for Giovanni Trapattoni's side.

There have been suggestions that Gibson could be under pressure to hold on to his place in the squad for Euro 2012.

Former Manchester United player Gibson has won 17 Republic caps.

The Everton midfielder was scheduled to join up with Trapattoni's squad along with club-mates Seamus Coleman and Shane Duffy.

Everton's statement added that "the extent of the injury is not yet known".

Derry-born midfielder Gibson has played seven games for Everton since joining the club from Manchester United and has yet to taste defeat in a blue jersey.
