Mahendra Singh Dhoni held his nerve at the death as India claimed a dramatic four-wicket victory over Australia with two balls to spare in their CB Series one-day international at the Adelaide Oval.
The India captain timed his side's run chase to perfection, launching Clint McKay for a towering six in the final over to help chase down the 270 target.
While Dhoni finished the job, it was Gautam Gambhir who started it with a fluent innings of 92 at the top of the order.
His departure triggered somewhat of a middle-order wobble, however Dhoni and Ravi Ashwin combined to take 13 runs off the final over to condemn Australia to their first defeat of the triangular series.
Earlier, debutant Peter Forrest and David Hussey both struck half-centuries to help Australia set India a testing target.
Hussey top-scored with 72 while Forrest enjoyed a fine start to his international career with an impressive 66 as Australia posted 269-8 after winning the toss.
Looking to make it three wins out of three in the tournament, Australia suffered a shaky start as Ricky Ponting, promoted to opener ahead of Matthew Wade, was dismissed by Vinay Kumar for six and it became 53-2 when David Warner was run out for 18.
Australia captain Michael Clarke contributed a rapid 38 before he became the third wicket to fall on 81 as India, looking for their second win of the series having lost to the host nation in their opening game, continued to make steady in-roads.
However, the tourists had to wait almost 20 overs for their next breakthrough as Forrest and Hussey joined forces to put on 98 for the fourth wicket.
Forrest looked on course for a debut century when he was finally dismissed, caught at deep square leg by Kumar off the bowling of Yadav, but not before the 26-year-old had struck five fours and the only two sixes of Australia's innings.
Hussey and Daniel Christian added 56 for the fifth wicket before the former departed having collected five boundaries in recording his eighth ODI half-century.
Christian then fell for 39 as India battled back to prevent Australia from setting a target closer to 300.
For India, seamers Umesh Yadav (2-49) and Vinay Kumar (2-58) were the pick of the bowlers in an innings which featured three run outs.
Gambhir and Sehwag then laid the platform for the run chase with a breezy 52-run partnership inside 10 overs.
Sehwag had made a run-a-ball 20 before he provided a leading edge straight to Hussey off McKay's first ball.
Virat Kohli fell to the same bowler for only 18, however a 76-run partnership between Gambhir and Rohit Sharma kept India up with the run-rate.
Gambhir struck seven boundaries during his 111-ball knock and could count himself unlucky to have been adjudged lbw to McKay (3-53) eight runs short of what would have been his 10th ODI century.
Sharma (33) had fallen 11 balls previous, chipping Ryan Harris tamely to Mitchell Starc at mid-on, and it was left to Dhoni and Suresh Raina to re-stabalise the chase.
Raina clubbed 38 off 30 deliveries but he too failed to see the job through after yorking himself coming down the wicket to Xavier Doherty (2-51).
With 13 runs required off McKay's final over the match was still in the balance and Australia then assumed favouritism when the first two deliveries cost only two.
However, Dhoni (44no) smashed the seamer back over his head for six, a shot which rattled the bowler, who offered up a waist-high no-ball next up before the India skipper sealed victory with three further runs through square-leg.
