Andre Vilas Boas at Europa League final
It looks like it will be more Portuguese voices at Stamford Bridge following the report that André Villas-Boas has resigned as coach to the Europa League winners, FC Porto, today and is expected to fill the managerial spot at Chelsea.
Vilas-Boas will follow in the footsteps of a former Portugal manager, Luiz Scolari, originally from Brazil and Jose Mourinho, with whom the former Porto manager has worked in the past at Chelsea.
Porto made an official announcement to the Portuguese stock market this morning and the only outstanding issue remains the compensation payment due to the club as part of the contractual release clauses.
The statement earlier today said: "Porto can inform the stock market that FC Porto has received notification from its coach André Villas-Boas, of the intention to resign with immediate effect. As such his employment contract shall be considered rescinded upon deposit of the stipulated amount."
Villas-Boas’ salary at Chelsea is expected to be £5m per season.
A Chelsea spokesman said on Monday: "We hope to be able to make an announcement regarding the new manager in the next few days or so, but until then we will not be commenting further on the speculation surrounding that appointment."
Despite the constant drip feeding of reports, a move for the former manager, Guus Hiddink, seemed to have stalled with his agent Cees van Nieuwenhuizen still saying that he is currently in charge of Turkey.
The 33 year old Vilas Boas will arrive in his new job at Stamford Bridge the same age as a number of his players and is part of a new breed of young continental managers who have either not played the game, or done so at the highest levels. Similar to his mentor, Jose Mourinho – earning the nickname ‘Mini Mourinho.”
