Ireland Not Best Without O'Driscoll

Brian O'Driscoll and hooker Rory Best have been ruled out of the forthcoming autumn international series for Ireland because of injuries.

O'Driscoll picked up an ankle injury in Leinster's game with Cardiff Blues and scans have shown that he will require surgery to repair ligament damage.

The inspirational centre is set to be out of action for eight to 12 weeks.

Best sustained sprained ligaments in his neck while playing for Ulster and will require rest and rehabilitation.

The former Ulster captain suffered the injury in his province's Pro12 win over the Dragons and his situation wil be assessed again after a period of four to six weeks.

Uncapped Richardt Strauss and Sean Cronin, who has 21 caps, are now set to battle it out for the number two shirt.

Strauss, born and raised in South Africa but uncapped by the Springboks, qualifies for Ireland on residency grounds this month having represented Leinster since 2009.

Rob Kearney has been ruled out of the series with a back injury

Cronin was one of seven players added to the original Irish panel of 31 on Sunday after Irish management reported that several of the squad had suffered knocks while in action for their clubs.

Ulster quartet Craig Gilroy, Paul Marshall, Paddy Jackson and Declan Fitzpatrick were all called up, along with Michael Bent and Tiernan O'Halloran.

News of the absence of two of Ireland's most senior and experienced players will come as a further blow to coach Declan Kidney, who already had to plan without ERC player of the year Rob Kearney because of a back injury.

Keith Earls was a candidate to replace Kearney, but O'Driscoll's absence is likely to see him moved to outside centre.

That leaves winger Tommy Bowe or Felix Jones, who is short of game time after recently returning from injury, as the options for the number 15 jersey.

Paul O'Connell will take the captaincy and it will be hoped he avoids injury given Best is third choice for the leadership duties.

O'Driscoll's injury will also see him miss Leinster's Heineken Cup games in December, and the Lions star may even face a race against time to make the start of Ireland's Six Nations campaign in February.

Best must be rated doubtful for Ulster's crucial Heineken Cup double-header against Northampton on 7 and 15 December.

Ireland begin their autumn series against South Africa in Dublin on 10 November, followed by a game between an Ireland XV and Fiji at Thomond Park a week later.

Argentina visit the Aviva Stadium on 24 November.

Ireland squad: Michael Bent (Leinster), Tommy Bowe (Ulster), Darren Cave (Ulster), Tom Court (Ulster), Sean Cronin (Leinster), Gordon D'Arcy (Leinster), Keith Earls (Munster), Stephen Ferris (Ulster), Declan Fitzpatrick (Ulster), Craig Gilroy (Ulster), Cian Healy (Leinster), Jamie Heaslip (Leinster), Iain Henderson (Ulster), Chris Henry (Ulster), Paddy Jackson (Ulster), David Kilcoyne (Munster), Luke Marshall (Ulster), Paul Marshall (Ulster), John Muldoon (Connacht), Conor Murray (Munster), Mike McCarthy (Connacht), Fergus McFadden (Leinster), Kevin McLaughlin (Leinster), Donncha O'Callaghan (Munster), Paul O'Connell (Munster), Tiernan O'Halloran (Connacht), Ronan O'Gara (Munster), Peter O'Mahony (Munster), Eoin Reddan (Leinster), Mike Ross (Leinster), Donnacha Ryan (Munster), Jonathan Sexton (Leinster), Richardt Strauss (Leinster), Andrew Trimble (Ulster), Dan Tuohy (Ulster), Simon Zebo (Munster).

Bradley Wiggins has won the prestigious Velo d'Or award after an historic 2012 campaign which included victory in the Tour de France.

The Team Sky rider claimed an unprecedented series of results this year, winning Paris-Nice, the Tour de Romandie and Criterium du Dauphine before triumphing in cycling's July showpiece.

Wiggins then rounded off his dream campaign by taking Olympic gold for Team GB in the time trial on home soil at London 2012.

The 32-year-old beat Belgian star Tom Boonen to the prize, which is decided by a poll of cycling journalists.

Boonen also enjoyed a superb season in 2012 as he secured the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix double for the second time in his career and also won Gent-Wevelgem and E3 Prijs Vlaanderen.

Third in the voting was Joaquim Rodriguez, who finished second at the Giro d'Italia, third at the Vuelta a Espana and won classics Il Lombardia and Fleche Wallonne.

Newly-crowned world champion Philippe Gilbert, winner of last year's award, and Tour de France green jersey winner Peter Sagan were fourth and fifth respectively.

KP Reintegrates into England Side

Kevin Pietersen's "reintegration" into the England side is set to be completed when he faces India A this week.

Pietersen, 32, was dropped in August for sending "provocative" text messages to South Africa players.

Left out of the India tour party, he was recalled after meeting with coach Andy Flower and senior players.

He plays in England's opening tour match, which starts on Tuesday, when Nick Compton is set to open the batting with captain Alastair Cook.

Compton will be preferred at the top of the order to fellow uncapped batsman Joe Root of Yorkshire.

"He is down to play and will be batting at four," Flower said of Pietersen.

The three-day match in Mumbai will be Pietersen's first for England since he made a brilliant 149 in the second Test against South Africa at Headingley in early August.

Cook said: "He's desperate to get going and we are desperate to have him back in the team.

"As I have always said, it's great to have world-class players in our team and, if we want to play the standard of cricket we know we are capable of, we will have to have our best players.

"As a senior batter, he is there to get runs and, off the field, to pass on his experience to the rest of the lads.

"He has played a huge amount of cricket, some 90 Test matches, and he has experience of sub-continent cricket with the IPL [Indian Premier League].

"That experience is valuable to us if we are going to get used to the conditions as quickly as we can."

Pietersen was omitted from England's squad for the defence of their World Twenty20 as discussions were held over his future.

Pietersen apologised to then captain Andrew Strauss, and Cook welcomed his return after the right-hander agreed a new four-month contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board and was added to the tour party.

Flower said he saw no reason why Pietersen's short-term contract would not be extended to 12 months.

"I hadn't actually thought much about the extension of his contract," he said. "We're here focusing on playing well in India; I don't envisage a problem.

"We've had some great success and some great times together over the last few years.

"I think we can work very well together in the future and we've already started that process."

Flower said he was confident Pietersen would return to his best for England.

"It takes a little while to get back into your rhythm and top form, but he's an amazing cricketer," he said.

"I'm looking forward to him being involved. We had a long chat this morning, we've had a number of chats on the phone and of course he flew back to England just recently. I think we'll work well together."

Pietersen joined the squad in India on Sunday from South Africa, where he had been playing for IPL side Delhi Daredevils in the T20 Champions League.

Upon the team's arrival in India on Monday, England announced that Twenty20 skipper Stuart Broad had been promoted to Test vice-captain for the tour.

The first match of the four-game Test series starts in Ahmedabad on 15 November.

Redpath Leaves Sale Sharks

Getty Images
Bryan Redpath has left Sale Sharks following the club's dismal start to the season.

The director of rugby has paid with his job for a run of seven successive Aviva Premiership defeats at the start of the new campaign.

Last month's decision to dismiss forwards coach Steve Scott as part of a backroom revamp failed to turn around the club's results.

And Redpath's short reign is now over less than five months after his appointment was confirmed.

Sale have won just once this season, beating Cardiff Blues in their opening Heineken Cup fixture.
